In a significant political development just days before the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 5, 2025, seven incumbent MLAs from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have tendered their resignations. The legislators, who were denied tickets for the upcoming polls, have expressed disillusionment with the party's leadership and direction.
MLAs Who Resigned:
- Girish Soni (Madipur)
- Rohit Mehraulia (Trilokpuri)
- Madan Lal (Kasturba Nagar)
- Rajesh Rishi (Janakpuri)
- Naresh Yadav (Mehrauli)
- Bhavna Gaur (Palam)
- Pawan Kumar Sharma (Adarsh Nagar)
These resignations come in the wake of AAP's decision to drop 20 incumbent MLAs from its candidate list, opting instead to field individuals who have switched from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress in certain constituencies.
The departing MLAs have voiced concerns over the party's current trajectory. For instance, Girish Soni highlighted internal issues within AAP, questioning, "After this, are we really common people?" Similarly, Rohit Mehraulia accused the party of exploiting the Dalit/Valmiki community for political gains without addressing employment-related challenges.
Madan Lal expressed a loss of faith in both AAP and its national convenor, Arvind Kejriwal, while Bhavna Gaur, a two-time MLA from Palam, shared her resignation letter on social media, stating she had "lost faith in you (Arvind Kejriwal) and the party."
In response to these developments, AAP's national spokesperson, Reena Gupta, clarified that internal surveys indicated the departing MLAs were not adequately serving their constituents, which influenced the decision to deny them tickets. She also suggested that dissatisfaction over ticket allocations led to their departure.
As the political landscape in Delhi shifts rapidly, the impact of these resignations on AAP's prospects in the forthcoming elections remains to be seen.
